Animals & Kids After School Program

Available to children ages 8-11 years old, the Animals & Kids After School Program offers five unique sessions (each session has six classes) where children will have a hands-on opportunity to work with the shelter animals.

Information:

  • Classes meet on Mondays from 4:00pm-4:45pm for six-weeks
  • Registration fee is $60. Please note, there is a 4% transaction fee for online registrations and a $10 cancellation fee.
  • Location: Naperville Area Humane Society, 1620 W Diehl Rd, Naperville, IL 60563
  • 5 sessions throughout the fall, winter, and spring:
    • Session 1: Videos! (Sept. 11, 18, 25 / Oct. 2, 9, 16)
      Help us create videos of our adoptable animals that will be posted on our website for potential adopters to view.
    • Session 2: Work at NAHS! (Oct. 23, 30 / Nov. 6, 13, 20, 27)
      Be an honorary NAHS employee and learn what it's like to have dogs and cats as your day-to-day co-workers.
    • Session 3: Spread Holiday Cheer! (Dec. 4, 11, 18 / Jan. 8, 22, 29)
      Spread some love and cheer to our homeless animals this holiday season by learning how, and helping, enrich their lives.
    • Session 4: Enrichment! (Feb. 5, 12, 26 / Mar. 5, 12, 19)
      Help create innovative ways to keep our animals busy and happy why they wait for their forever homes.
    • Session 5: Videos Part 2! (Apr. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 / May 7)
      Join the shelter animals as they enjoy springtime and help capture their cutest moments to showcase in videos for potential adopters.

K9 Manners

The K9 Manners program is a 5-session class for the spring and fall that allows kids to work with a dog at the Naperville Area Humane Society. Children will learn positive reinforcement training techniques and have the opportunity to work with our shelter dogs during each class. The training the dogs receive will be in line with the requirements on the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluation. At the conclusion of each session, the children will have a strong sense of accomplishment knowing that they helped their dog-partner get one step closer towards achieving his or her CGC certificate.

  • 11- to 14-year-olds
  • Two 5-week sessions available (one in the spring and one in the fall)

Homeschool Heroes

Available to children ages 8-13 years old, Homeschool Heroes allows home-educated children to, not only learn about and enhance the lives of shelter animals, but have hands-on opportunities working with the shelter animals.

Spring Break Junior Internship

We know that preteens and teens want to make a difference in the lives of animals, and this program will show them how. We are looking for dedicated teens ages 12-15 to spend their Spring Break with us. The Naperville Area Humane Society will take ten teens on a week- long journey of hands-on animal care while gaining knowledge about animal welfare issues. Guest speakers will turn the students’ passion into action! This internship will open their eyes and focus on issues that affect animals and the environment in our world today. 

If you know a preteen or teen that wants to make a difference, please tell them about this exciting program offered again in the spring of 2018!


One-Day Camps

Through crafts, games, and activities we’ll explore how we care for our animals at the Naperville Area Humane Society and how to be safe around all animals. Each camp will have specific lessons tailored to the holiday on which it is held and will educate and entertain each camper! 

Information:

  • Each camp runs from 9am-12pm
  • $50 per child. Note, there is a 4% transaction fee for online registrations and a $10 cancellation fee.

The Naperville Area Humane Society offers six different summer camps that allow children to be immersed in animal learning and fun. Each camp features  educational activities, including games, crafts, guest speakers from other animal-related organizations, animal interactions, and more!

School Educational Presentations

The Naperville Area Humane Society offers many educational opportunities for schools throughout the year. All programs can be modified to meet the needs of your classroom, or we can create one to fit your specifications. The programs and presentations are offered free of charge.

Adult Seminar Series

In our Adult Seminar Series, guest speakers cover topics on domesticated animals, wildlife, and other animal welfare issues. View our Events page for upcoming Adult Seminars.


Scout Patch Program

The Naperville Area Humane Society’s Pet Care & Safety Patch Program consists of three levels: Daisy, Brownie/Cub Scout, and Junior Girl Scout/Boy Scout. At each level, the scouts do a variety of age-appropriate activities to teach her or him about being responsible pet people. All activities are done during troop meetings or at home. The last activity is a troop visit to the Naperville Area Humane Society for a tour (please schedule at least one month in advance).

Information:

  • Tours require a $25 donation and are offered weekdays during our non-public hours.
  • Patches will be issued only after all activities and the tour are completed, and the cost of the patches is $2 per scout. 
  • All activities are done during troop meetings or at home.

Birthday Parties

The Naperville Area Humane Society offers fun-filled two-hour parties for children that start with an educational talk and a behind-the-scenes shelter tour. A Party Coordinator will help you with game and craft suggestions. The children will be able to take photos and interact with our shelter animals depending on availability of appropriate animals and comfort level/behavior of party guests. And, of course, there is time for presents and cake!

Information:

  • Minimum donation of $125 (weekdays) or $150 (weekends) is required and includes: services of a Party Coordinator, educational talk and shelter tour, paper goods, and a special gift for the birthday child. We require a 50% deposit when the party is booked.
  • Food and drinks are not supplied by the Naperville Area Humane Society, but you are welcome to bring pizza, cake, goodies, drinks, decorations, etc. at your own expense.
  • Parties are scheduled during times that our shelter is not open to the public and depend on Party Coordinator availability. Weekend parties are held from 9:30am-11:30am Saturday or Sunday, and weekday parties are scheduled when we are not open to the public (usually on school holidays).
  • Space is limited to 10 children and no more than 15 people total.

Tours

We offer educational tours of our animal shelter to groups totaling 15 or less (perfect for scouting groups!). Each tour includes a discussion about the Naperville Area Humane Society and a full behind-the-scenes tour of our facility. Tours can also be tailored to cover a particular aspect or topic, if desired.

Information:

  • Offered year-round by appointment only
  • $25 donation required for each tour ($2 per person additional fee for any tour over 15 people
  • Some groups elect to do a service project and collect supplies for NAHS. Please visit our Wish List to learn more about what items are needed.
