Too young to volunteer at Naperville Area Humane Society (NAHS) but want to make a difference? Eager to help animals and learn about the mission of NAHS and what it’s like to run a shelter? Do you need to earn service hours?

Now is your chance to get a first-hand experience as we welcome ages 12-15 to sign up for our Junior Ambassador Program.

This 3 week opportunity will offer young animal lovers who are not able to volunteer yet, a behind-the-scenes look into working in the field of animal welfare, learning different policies, procedures and safety precautions for working with and caring for animals in a shelter while earning service hours (if they need them).

They will learn what it’s like to run a shelter by completing various tasks both NAHS staff and volunteers complete on a daily basis which may include projects like cleaning cat condos and dog kennels, filling water bowls, emptying garbage, sweeping, laundry and more. The type of tasks will be dependent upon NAHS needs at the time. This class will also prepare them for enrolling in our NAHS volunteer program once they turn 16 and will equip them to be advocates for all animals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should my child wear?

  • We recommend students wear old clothes and shoes they don’t mind getting dirty.  Shoes must be closed-toe (no crocs or sandals) and you must wear pants, no shorts or skirts are allowed. Students will be getting a hands-on experience of what it's like to help take care of our animals.

Will students get to interact with the animals?

  • Yes, we reserve some time for animal interaction so students may connect to the animals their service is benefitting the most! However, we reserve the right to limit or stop animal interaction basked on behavior and safety. Is this for children only or can parents come?

Is this for children only or can parents come?

  • This is for student participants only. While they will be supervised by an adult, it is important they feel responsible and are able to work independently. Parents/guardians will need to pick up and drop off their kids. This is a great time for parents/guardians to get some errands done or enjoy an hour to themselves!

Why is there a cost?

  • The program fee covers the expenses of staff time and resources as well as a small source of revenue for NAHS, a non-profit organization that depends on donations to operate.

Can we bring donations?

  • Of course! We will gladly accept any donations you have collected or purchased. Please see our wish list for our current needs.
